A History of Martin & Co.

The story of Martin & Co. began in 1833 when Christian Frederick Martin, a skilled luthier, founded the company in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. Over its long history, Martin & Co. has been responsible for numerous innovations that have shaped the acoustic guitar industry.

One such innovation was the invention of the X-bracing in the mid-19th century, a technique that strengthened guitar bodies and produced a richer tone, which is still widely used today. Martin’s experiments with design and craftsmanship led to the creation of the American flat-top acoustic guitar as we know it today.

Decades later, Frank Henry Martin introduced the Dreadnought, arguably the most important and influential guitar body ever built.
